SATURDAY FEBRUARY 23 DUBFIRE, CARLO LIO AND SHADED

THOUGH some might miss the olden days of minimal, where a simple bleep-bloop combo sent you straight through the roof, the rest of us are getting as grungy, loose and punk as possible to guys like Dubfire and Carlo Lio, and loving it. Clad in his trademark black tee, these days Dubfire still keeps things as twisted and dark as ever but with a not-so-subtle flair for snappy, funk-fuelled rhythm. Joining Dubfire will be the Sci+Tec honcho’s right hand man, Carlo Lio, along with hometown hero, Shaded. Hailing from SoCal, Shaded describes himself as, “a little off, a little ripped, and a little f---ed up.” He rides the surf- grunge-minimal wave well, with heavy influences from anyone over at Minus or Sci+Tec, especially the bouncier, funk-happy players. And with Insomniac, the crew behind EDC, manning the production team, it’s sure to be one hell of a party.

THURSDAY FEBRUARY 14 AUDIOJACK, MATCHES, PELVIC THRUST

THOUGH Audiojack’s career began with techno, these days the UK duo (made up of James Rial and Richard Burkinshaw) are making a giant splash in the deeper side of the dance pool, embracing warm, disco infused house grooves and releasing on lauded labels like 20:20 Vision, Leftroom, Get Physical, BPitch Control and Diynamic. Most recently, their highly anticipated remix of ‘Plastic Dreams’ got huge support from Marco Carola over the summer, who played it practically every Friday at Music On. That little gem was released on the duo’s own indie powerhouse imprint, Gruuv, which has also seen releases by H.O.S.H and Catz ‘N Dogz, amongst others. Their sets simply shine from front to back with bittersweet melancholia and ecstatic rushes warming your heart, making this the perfect show to bring your significant other to for a serious love affair.

JOY ORBISON, U STREET MUSIC HALL, WASHINGTON DC

SUNDAY FEBRUARY 10 JOY ORBISON, ENCRYPTION VS. REFUGEE

TRYING to pin a genre to Joy Orbison is like trying to throw darts after a pint of vodka – it’s a moving target, but you’re so drunk, you hardly notice. He seamlessly blends soul, garage, bass, techno and every brand of house like the tracks were written for one another. His breakout hit and debut single ‘Hyph Mngo’ was called the “most forward thinking dubstep track of 2009,” and very likely restored some faith in the genre amongst the heads, something he continues to do on a daily basis. Now Orbison is embarking on a North America tour and will be stopping by U Street Music Hall, which Beatport picked as having the second best sound system in North America, calling it a ‘bass dungeon designed with sound as its top priority.’ A dungeon of bass and one of the kings of underground bass? Sounds like a match made in bass heaven.
