Hand Tools – the process of change

Hand tools have been in

existence since the dawn of time, but as civilization progressed tools have become more sophisticated. Through history, tools give us incite into society – the more advanced a society the more tools it uses. For instance the Romans used an extensive range, many of which we would recognize today. A craftsman’s tools were his main means of living. They were a huge investment in time and money, either being made by him or purchased from specialist manufacturers and suppliers. Many old tools are stamped with names and initials of the owner indicating the value placed upon them. Tools found in Kenya in 1969

are estimated to be 2,600,000 years old and their state of development would suggest even older tools may yet be discovered. Sharpened stones were early keys to human survival and with the growth of agriculture and animal domestication roughly 10,000 years ago the demands of a settled way of life led to greater specialization. 5,000 years ago copper, bronze and eventually iron came into use. The earliest tools were multipurpose, but increasingly specialized tools come into existence and the range of tools within a workmen’s tool chest increased as craftsmanship demanded specific tools designed for one job or material. In modern times the range of

hand tools is vast and ever increasing. As our civilization progresses at sometimes- breakneck speed, manufacturers invest time and money in exploring the use of new materials and answering the needs of the modern craftsman. In the Voice of the Industry article this month, Graham Godfrey describes how his company works with a group of professional tradesmen to understand their needs and improve and develop tools to make their lives easier. Those selling tools need to keep abreast of the latest innovations to ensure they offer their customers a wide choice of hand tools to meet the modern working environment.
