Smart thinking for 2013 and beyond
Throughoutmywhole career, therewas always a big event either taking place or on the short termhorizon thatwas driving global investment in the electronics industry. A quick scan ofmymemory recalls, in rough date order: home computing; building the internet infrastructure; technology-basedwars; the move to lead-free products;mobile phones; LED lighting; renewable energy etc.
However,when the credit crunch hit, the appetite for grasping new
opportunitieswas often replaced by a sudden fight for survival. Luckily for the electronics industry, business restructuring is a finite processwhich, formany companies, is nowcomplete. In fact, comments suggest that not only have these businesses reduced their costs, they havemanaged to continue operating profitably and amass cash reserves.
For this reason I started asking the same question: what next? I asked just
this question during a recent ECSN gathering. The replies were fascinating. In the short term, there is plenty of business still waiting to be done during the full implementation of LED lighting, while on the longer termhorizon electric vehicles beckon.
Yet, what provedmost interesting were the two suggestions formedium
termgrowth: tele-health and Smart Grid. A year or so ago I would have been sceptical of both. However, on one hand I’mhoping to treatmyself to an iPhone enabled blood pressuremonitor, while on the other hand I had an interesting conversation at Electronica regarding the use of electric vehicle battery packs asmobile domestic energy storage devices deployed in a Smart Grid infrastructure.
