WHAT Are THe frequenCy fAqS?

ESNA put some questions to frequency control specialist, TGS Crystals, to find out howthe company supports buyers in their quest for the perfect product

Q A

What are the differences between frequency and oscillator components?

Frequency devices are passive components and they need external circuitry to drive them.

Oscillators, on the other hand, are active components. They

have circuitry inside designed to provide a stable clock output. A crystal oscillator is an electronics oscillator circuit that

uses themechanical resonance of a vibrating crystal of piezoelectricmaterial to create an electrical signal with a very precise frequency.

What should purchasing professionals look out for when sourcing frequency products?

It is important that buyers take into consideration whether the frequency products they want to purchase are compatible with the IC specified on their printed circuit board (PCB).

Are counterfeit components a big problemwithin the frequency sector?

Yes. Unfortunately, many low-cost components are printed with well-known brandmarks on the outside of the device, but the character of the electronics inside is unstable.

What are the latest applications for frequency components?

Frequency components can be found within a variety of the latest andmost innovative end-products, including new smart phones, notebooks, e-meters, smart TVs, base stations, servers, tyre pressuremonitor systems and rear cameramodules.

What are the current lead times for frequency components?

At present we are offering lead times of two to three weeks for 49U, 49S and 49SMD quartz crystals and around four to five weeks for SMD crystals, oscillators, ceramic resonators and filters and SAWdevices.

What are your predictions regarding cost in the short term future?

The cost will be down at least five per cent for the next few years.

How does TGS Crystals select its distribution partners?

A distributor represents the liaison between the customer and themanufacturer, sowe examine a number of factorswhenwe choose a distributor. Firstly,we examine their operational status and their desire for cooperationwith our company. We also look at their operating strength, market share andwhether their exploitation and development has been successful to date. Finally,we examine their dealer networks.

What questions do you ask your frequency distributors?

We examine a number of issues with any potential distributor. Primarily, we want to get to grips with their business idea for promoting TGS products. We therefore ask what product lines they currently run and whether they run any similar products that could conflict with ours. The answers they provide, help us to select themost appropriate distribution partners, capable of providing the best support to buyers of TGS Crystals components.
