He’s won Olympic and World titles, but the freestyle star still has plenty he wants to achieve at the international level

INCOLN, Neb. - Jordan Burroughs has a deep appreci- ation for what John Smith accomplished on the wrestling mat. Smith won World and Olympic titles in freestyle wrestling in back-to-back years in 1987 and 1988. Burroughs achieved the same feat by winning back-to-back


World and Olympic titles in 2011 and 2012. But Smith, the head coach at Oklahoma State, was just get-


ting started when he won his first two World-level medals. Smith added three more World titles from 1989-91 before capping his amazing international career by winning his second Olympic gold medal in 1992.


“I commend John so much for doing what he did,” Burroughs said. “To mentally and physically be able to prepare yourself year in and year out for six years straight to be the best in the World, it is unbelievable what he was able to accomplish. “Doing what John did is definitely something I’ve set out to do, but it’s going to be very tough to do.” Shortly after winning his World title last year, Burroughs pro- claimed he not only was going to try to equal what Smith did. Burroughs wanted to go one step further and win seven straight World-level titles.
