edge, and train smart to maximize his conditioning while staying healthy.” Betterman said the Olympic Trials loss to Coleman still gnaws at him. “That loss drives me and it motivates me,” he said. “It’s going to make me that much more hungry to be successful.” Betterman said his ultimate goal now is gearing toward the next Olympic Games, which are set for 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

“God has a plan for me,” he said. “It wasn’t Beijing and it wasn’t London, but I feel like it is Rio now.

“My goal is to still win two Olympic medals. I plan to wrestle for two more cycles.” A more immediate goal is earning a trip to the 2013 World Championships in September in Budapest, Hungary. “I just want to take my spot back as the No. 1 guy and show these young guys I am still here,” he said. “I want to win the U.S. Open and the World Team Trials, and then get back to the World Championships.”

Betterman said he hopes to help the U.S. come back strong after it struggled in Greco-Roman wrestling at the 2012 Olympics in London.

Olympics. I thought we had great poten- tial to win some medals, and it stinks that we didn’t. There is no reason why we can’t come back and win some medals at the Worlds this year.”
