Passengers have their say on Ordsall Chord options

R

ail passengers and the public have been giving their feedback on the Ordsall Chord proposals, including which of two bridge designs they prefer.

The consultation on the project, aimed at making rail travel in the north easier by improving the connections between Manchester Piccadilly, Oxford Road and Victoria stations, opened in late November, with a series of exhibitions around the city.

Experts are pro- gressing the design of the project, in- cluding two potential bridge options on dis- play: a bow string railway arch, or an alterna- tive flat bridge.

Councillors and business leaders from across the region have given their views on the plans and public feedback will also be used to inform

the final design.

The first part of the programme will ease a bottleneck to the south of Piccadilly and free up space on the network to deliver faster, more frequent services. These will include: two new fast trains per hour between Manchester Victoria and Liverpool; six fast trains an hour

Adam Hewitt reports on Network Rail’s plans to improve rail connections across Manchester and the north.

managing director, said: “Britain relies on rail and with demand for rail travel increasing it’s essential we invest in the railway to provide a better service for passengers with more trains, additional seats and fewer delays. We thank those who have already made a valuable contribution to the development of this vital project.”

economy and rail travel more generally.

between Leeds and Manchester; faster journeys between Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool; a new direct service through the city centre to Manchester Airport; and faster journey times to Hull, Newcastle and the North East.

The final go-ahead will be given in autumn 2014 if all goes to plan, with construction beginning in winter 2014 and completed by winter 2016.

Network Rail approval for locators and transmitters

Christine Swetnam, managing director of Cable Detection, explains that the latest additions to the company’s product range, the EZiSYSTEM xf series Locators and Transmitters, are now Network Rail approved, meaning all its products can now be used on and around the rail infrastructure.

W

ith Cable Detection’s state-of-the-art xf locators and transmitters, users

can detect buried utilities faster and more accurately than ever before.

The xf range has been specifically designed with long distance tracing in mind. The ability to trace low transmitter frequencies provides a greater tracing range making locating underground utilities easier than ever before.

2012 has been a great year for Cable Detection. Receiving approval on all of our products, has once again confirmed our commitment to safety and product conformity.

Having passed the

stringent series of tests, we are delighted that the full range of our locators and transmitters are now accepted for use on Network Rail’s infrastructure.

We are particularly proud that our EZiTEX t300 (3 watt) Signal Transmitter has been awarded the approval. The first, and only, high powered transmitter in the UK market to have been recognised for its safety conformity will allow users to trace services over a greater distance, and improve on detection in areas of high signal interference.

The following products have Network Rail approval: EZiCAT i500, i550, i600, i650, i500xf, i550xf, i600xf, and i650xf; EZiTEX t100, t300, t100xf, and t300xf; and Signal

Clamp.

As with all of Cable Detection’s locators, the EZiSYSTEM xf range represent the latest design in cable detection technology, with state- of- the-art digital signal processing (DSP), automatic controls, in-built test function and signal strength indicator, all our products make light work of ground surveys.
