Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa, won a nationwide “Small Steps, Big Wins Campus Challenge” sponsored by Net Impact, a global nonprofit that focuses on using business skills to produce social and environmental change. During the competition, Wartburg students tracked, photographed and posted on social media such socially responsible actions as walking instead of driving, drying clothes on a rack instead of using a dryer, voting and volunteering. Actions received points for levels of difficulty and influence. When the challenge ended Dec. 10, Wartburg had 9,589 points—double that of runner-up California State Uni- versity at Chico. Sophomore Madison Stumbo got Wartburg involved in the competition to help students “realize

that incorporating small things into their daily lives can add up to cause a positive impact.” A second Small Steps competition began in January, but the results weren’t available at presstime.

Augustana College, Sioux Falls, S.D., received a gift of more than $570,000 (from the sale of farmland) from alumni Jim and Myrna Wylie toward a new science center. Both spent their careers working in health care, so “as we started to think about [giving to the science project] from our faith commitment, it just made sense,” Jim Wylie said. Augustana President Rob Oliver said the gift “will live on for generations through countless stu- dents who will explore and discover

important scientific endeavors.” College leaders are working to raise funds for the center, to be named for longtime Augustana biology pro- fessor Sven Froiland, after Sanford Health made a $20 million challenge gift in fall 2012.

St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn., is partnering with longtime rival Carle- ton College to share infrastructure, resources and cost-savings while enhancing student experiences. The colleges have merged their libraries and are exploring collaboration in the areas of payroll, human resources, technology and more. A $50,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation is helping the colleges fund the exploration process. 
