1 CIELO / 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY, NEW YORK CITY

CIELO, 18 LITTLE WEST 12TH STREET, NEW YORK FRIDAY JANUARY 18 WOLF + LAMB VS SOUL CLAP

This year, the legendary New York hotspot Cielo will be celebrating its 10th anniversary party with a series of ten parties — one for each year, see? Starting on 1/10 and going on until 1/31, take your pick from the hand- picked array of talent on offer; how do The Martinez Brothers, Horse Meat Disco and Todd Terje & Danny Krivit grab you as a quick sample?

For our own pick, we’ve plumped for a performance by Brooklyn natives Wolf+Lamb, who are facing off with friends and long-time collaborators, Soul Clap. Both are known for their colorful, playful style, full of flair and originality, visually and sonically. It could be described as a perfect blend of personalities and locations — the lush warmth of Miami, Wolf + Lamb’s winter home, mixed with the individuality and diversity of New York, where their famous Marcy Hotel parties first brought them to prominence.

When the four of them are together, things tend to get… interesting. Both push the boundaries of genre- blending, squeezing the best out of an incredibly varied range of influences and backgrounds — funk, soul, hip-hop, disco, house and pretty much anything else that takes their fancy. Expect saxophone riffs, wandering basslines and crackly analog warmth, their timeless sound complimenting Cielo’s retro-futuristic décor like no other. This is an anniversary not to be missed.

APOLLONIA, SRB BROOKLYN, BROOKLYN FRIDAY JANUARY 25 APOLLONIA, NIKI MCNALLY

Apollonia has been on the tip of everyone’s tongues lately. With prominent radio mixes, a record label under the same moniker and a rapidly growing tour schedule, it’s easy to see why. Last summer, the French trio of Shonky, Dan Ghenacia and Dyed Soundorom (all formidable enough in their own right) got a chance to show the world their combined sound, debuting a rolling, dubbed-out house style.

The trio expertly let the pressure slowly bubble up, releasing brand new records from amongst their ranks, as well as reissues of some of the classics that had been burning a hole in their record collection. That’s why it’s such a good thing that Verboten is giving the group an extended set, allowing listeners to become fully absorbed in the ever-expanding world of melodies and rhythms their sets deliver.
