Accountability and Security

Security, privacy and accountability will continue to emerge as significant risks for nonprofits organizations.

“I think you are going to see that the litigation landscape is going to continue to evolve.”

Beth Goldberg, Zurich

While computer hacking is getting a great deal of well-deserved attention, nonprofit organizations also have to protect against more traditional breaches, like documents containing personal information that are accidentally left in a public place. Computer breaches trigger specific requirements to notify those whose privacy may have been violated. For a small nonprofit organization, the notification process can pose a tremendous logistical and financial challenge.

Nonprofits also face greater accountability requirements under federal laws like Sarbanes-Oxley and state laws like California’s Not-for-Profit Integrity Act.
