that motion failed 9-3. A subsequent motion passed recommending that the commercial industry pay for part of the shortfall it created and the remainder of the money coming from general funds. DNR’s recommendation to the
General Assembly was made after the writing of this article. Action is expect- ed before the session ends in April.
Volunteers help kids fish
He has worked closely with CCA Mississippi and particularly with the Bay Chapter to identify suitable reefing locations and to facilitate the creation of new artificial reefs. These reefs have been phenomenal inshore structures, and we thank Mr. Cuevas for his ongo- ing work in this area.
First CCA Mississippi scholarship awarded
The Bay Chapter awarded the first
CCA Mississippi scholarship to Our Lady Academy graduate Blake Stephano to help her pursue her stud- ies in Marine Biology at William Carey University in Hattiesburg. The scholar- ship fund was created by the Bay Chapter and funded through local fundraising activities and support from Keesler Federal Credit Union in order to provide annual scholarship opportu- nities for aspiring students from the Bay Chapter who plan to pursue a course of study related to marine con- servation and fisheries. Blake says that her junior year pro-
Sixteen volunteers from the Mid-
Shore Chapter taught fishing skills to more than 200 local youngsters in November as part of the Easton Water - fowl Festival’s Kids Fishing Derby. The CCA members taught casting skills, baiting hooks, playing a fish and other techniques to the kids, many of whom never had fished before. The largest fish caught was a 21.5-pound carp, although most of the young anglers caught bluegill and sun fish, planted by Maryland’s DNR. “This was a great day for the kids
and their families,” said Michael Kirby, chapter president. “Our guys thor- oughly enjoyed teaching fishing and conservation skills to these budding anglers. It’s what CCA is all about.”

“Friend in Conservation 2012” Award to Kerwin Cuevas at the annual Sunset on the Bay banquet on Oct. 6. vided the inspiration for her career path when she took courses in marine biology, field studies, zoology and chemistry and realized that marine biology was a career path that she wanted to pursue for the rest of her life. The Bay Chapter is looking forward to awarding a second $750 scholarship in 2013, and other scholarship opportuni- ties are expected to be developed. Congratulations to Blake!
Biloxi Bay Chapter hooks up new membership event
When the Biloxi Bay Chapter moved
its annual banquet from the fall to the spring, the members decided to add a new membership event to generate interest in chapter activities and intro- duce others to CCA. The new event, The Biloxi Bay Hookup at The Hook Up, started small but quickly bal- looned into a great event thanks to the hard work of volunteers, spearheaded by Vice President Randall Broussard and Event Chair man Jerry Munro. Live music, free beer, good food and
great new venue at The Hook Up restaurant on Biloxi Bay helped to draw nearly 250 people out on a cold Tuesday night to have a great time and snap up some silent auction items, raf- fles and door prizes. The Biloxi Bay chapter is looking forward to making this an annual event and would like to thank The Hook Up, Rex Distributing, BP and Bancorp South for their help in making the event such a success.

Efforts to support the SPEC Program continue CCA Mississippi efforts to provide
brood stock to the Spotted Seatrout Enhancement Cooperative (SPEC) pro- gram at the Gulf Coast Research Lab’s (GCRL) fish hatchery in Ocean Springs continue in full force. The SPEC pro- gram, a cooperative effort between the Department of Marine Resources and the GCRL is a stock enhancement pro- gram that releases fingerlings back into Mississippi watersheds. The Bay Chapter has spearheaded
efforts to work with the SPEC pro- gram since 2007, and CCA members have been instrumental in providing much of the initial brood stock for the program (all of the brood stock for Bay St. Louis) as well as helping to regularly replenish and restock those fish to ensure genetic diversity among the population. On Oct. 20, Bay Chapter members held an event to specifically target male trout for the hatchery. “This s a great day for Bay St. Louis,”
said Bob Castoro, owner of Bay Ma - rina and the host of the Bay St. Louis events since 2007. “At the live catch event that we normally hold in December, it is hard to get enough male trout for the hatchery, so this year we are trying to get the males early and the females at our regular Decem - ber event. Today we provided nearly 70 males and we hope to have the same success with the females at the Dec. 8 event.” Over the last five years, the SPEC
program has released nearly 300,000 fingerlings into Bay St. Louis and more than 500,000 fingerlings into Missis sippi watersheds, with release numbers increasing every year.
Ship Island Chapter
celebrates Christmas on the Roof The Ship Island Chapter hosted a
new event for December with its Christmas on the Roof membership party. The event was held at the Great Southern Club on the top of the Hancock Bank Building in Gulfport and provided a great chance for mem- bers to get together before the holi- days and even do a little bit of last minute Christmas shopping. The Ship Island Chapter is looking forward to expanding in 2013. The great turnout at the event was a good way to wrap up 2012 and build momentum for the year ahead.
