for millions of years on the same reefs. Now, though, with the numbers increas- ing, anglers are losing targeted species to goliaths, but that’s only oppor- tunism coming into play.” Losing a trophy snapper or grouper
still aggravates guides and charter boat captains, regardless. Captain Dan Clymer specializes in shallow-water grouper trips off Crystal River and Homosassa, Florida. “When I’m bottom-fishing, I hook
goliaths on a regular basis, like seven out of every 10 trips,” he explains.
“They’re all over the Nature Coast. I’ve seen them as shallow as eight feet on rocks and on one big crack in 21 feet, I counted 15 one time. I’ve even caught three up to 80 pounds on trolling plugs. “The majority of my clients would
like to see some kind of harvest,” he continues. “It would have to be a limit- ed take, like maybe a lottery system or kill tag similar to the gator hunts. If it was unlimited, you could wipe them out again in a hurry. And continuing the ban on spearfishermen is a no
brainer. If you dive, the goliaths just sit there so it would be easy to clean out a spot. But a one-fish limit, with maybe a 50- to 70-inch slot size, would be nice. I’d gladly pay $100 to take one home on occasion. They’re a really cool fish.” Captain Glyn Austin, who runs flats
and nearshore trips in Sebastian on the state’s east coast, agrees. “I think a limited fishery is almost
necessary,” Austin says. “There’s no shortage by any means. We catch quite a few smaller fish in the inlet and there are guys who target larger ones
