Au revoir St Julien, bienvenue Chabrot
n walking down Long Lane – on the way to Cellar Gascon – we noticed that the well
reviewed French restaurant, the St. Julien, had closed and was
being refurbished. A note in the window from
the previous owner said he was leaving after eight years and had passed the restaurant on to an unspecified colleague, who was
refurbishing it.
Pascal Aussignac, the co-owner and principal chef for the Gascon restaurants, however, informed us it was being taken over by the team which runs the hugely well regarded French bistro style restaurant, Chabrot Bistrot d’Amis, in Knightsbridge – a restaurant which has gained a great following. I don’t know the opening date, but refurbishment was
Burger and Lobster in St John Street
nother new restaurant opening in the area is a brand new Burger & Lobster which has
replaced the relatively shortlived Bistro du Vin in St John Street, which itself replaced the shortlived Eastside Inn. As its name suggests the restaurant
only serves hamburgers and lobster as a main course (which seems expensive for a burger but reasonably cheap for lobster) – all at £20. It has two highly successful establishments already in the West End – indeed as it does not take table bookings one may have to wait in line for some time to get into these at busy times of the day although initial reports suggest the St John Street restaurant is still relatively queue-free. As Burger & Lobster is also shortly to open a fourth branch in Bread Street in the City, this may further ease any
strain on the Clerkenwell
establishment with devotees in the Cheapside/St Paul’s area not having to walk the quarter mile or so to St. John Street for their fix.
