2012 has been a big year for Great Britain. A year in which the eyes of the globe turned towards us for the world’s largest sporting event and a year in which we got to show the world that sustainable solutions aren’t compromised or pedes- trian or a nice-to-have.

Real leadership is pushing the agenda, breaking new ground, raising that bar... so that others have to do the same to keep up

They are inspirational, innovative and can, and should, be embedded at the heart of any operation.

It has been a year in which winning and leading were the stuff of daily news and in which the drive towards excellence has never been more apparent or higher in the public consciousness.

London 2012 was a national moment, but it was also an international platform. An opportunity to show the world what could be done when it came to sustain- able events – one of the key reasons it was a winner at last year’s event and has again been named as a finalist this year. From the outset it was positioned as, ‘the most sustainable games ever’. I, however, add my voice to those that hope that this is not true.

London 2012 cannot be allowed to be the most sustainable games ever. Simply the most sustainable games yet. A bench- mark, or to borrow a phrase from chair

of the Commission for a Sustainable London, Shaun McCarthy, the bar. The bar beneath which no subsequent games can dip. Because that is what real leadership is.

It’s pushing the agenda, breaking new ground, raising that bar and sharing out- comes so that others have to do the same to keep up.

And it’s that, that we were celebrat- ing at the Sustainability Leaders Awards this month, organised by SB and our sis- ter title edie.net. Those businesses and organisations that are changing the game with their sustainability initiatives and strategies.

The winners, and all of the finalists, represent the very best when it comes to sustainability whether that’s going beyond best practice, driving technol- ogy innovation, or introducing game- changing strategies and initiatives. All of the winners are profiled in this issue of SB and I’d like to offer my warm- est congratulations to each and every one of them.

I can’t think of a better way to end the year than by showcasing the Leaders of 2012. And, of course, by wishing every SB reader a very merry Christmas.
