Pretty Parrots New Guinea is home to many other birds. Take some of the parrots, for example. You’ll find as many as 46 kinds of colorful parrots on the island. Some have stripes. Others have a rainbow of colors. Here, you will also find the world’s
smallest parrots. Te buff-faced pygmy parrot is the smallest of all. It’s only as big as a person’s thumb. Tis small bird eats many things.
It eats fruit and insects. It also eats lichen, which grows on trees.
The cassowary is a flightless bird.
Big Bird Cassowaries also stand out for their size. Tis flightless bird is huge. It can grow to be about 2 meters (6 feet) tall. Tat’s almost as tall as an ostrich. Even though it’s a big bird, a
cassowary can be hard to spot. Tis shy bird lives in swampy areas. It oſten hides. It wants to stay away from people. A cassowary can be dangerous if
it feels threatened. It fluffs out its shaggy, black feathers. Tis makes it look bigger. It also hisses. It might charge, too. Tis bird is
fast. It can outrun a bus. It can also kick with sharp claws.
