Arizona is the place to be for spring training baseball and terrific golf. BY RON KROICHICK
Back in the day, before Arizona had a real freeway system and before the Cactus League learned the wonders of geographic consolidation, a spring training golf/baseball junket had its limita- tions. Only a handful of major league teams trained in the desert—including one or two in Tucson, the Padres in Yuma (practically halfway to the moon) and the Angels even farther away (in Palm Springs). It was maddening to get around the Valley of the Sun on surface streets, and the golf was enjoyable but hardly overwhelming. Boy, that was a long time ago.
