Damen goes local in Brazil

Talha-Mar PSV D

amen Shipyards is further strengthen- ing its involvement in the Brazilian

offshore market with six Plat- form Supply Vessels, type PSV 4500, built under licence by Wilson Sons in Santos, Brazil. Two vessels have recently

been delivered and the other four will be delivered through- out 2013.

Damen and Wilson have

enjoyed a business relationship for 20 years and the new ves- sels will be supplied to WSUT, a joint venture between Brazil- ian operator Wilson Sons and the Chilean Ultratug group for

ockwise subsidiary Fairstar Heavy Transport says work has begun on

its new White Marlin heavylift Type 1 vessel at the Guangzhou Shipyard in China. White Marlin’s specifica- tion will give it a capacity and vessel capabilities similar to Dockwise’s existing Blue Mar- lin. Scheduled delivery will be in Q4 2014.

Dockwise said the decision to build a Type 1 rather than a Type 2 vessel, for a cost increase of some $40m, removes the re- quirement Dockwise faced to withdraw its existing Type 2, Black Marlin from service in order to convert it to a Type 1 to satisfy growing demand for larger vessels. “Such a conversion, at an estimated cost of USD 60 mil- lion would have removed one

long term charter to Petrobras. To date Wilson Sons has built 16 Damen PSVs, all for its own fleet.

Damen said: “Brazil is very much an expanding market and particularly the offshore sector is demonstrating excep- tionally strong growth. “Local manufacturing is a

key factor and the service through Damen Technical Co- operation (offering ships in kit form for completion locally) ensures the shipbuilder com- plies with the 60% local con- tent threshold imposed by the government.”

The 4,500 DWT vessel has

an overall length of 87m, 16m beam and maximum draught of 6.19m, providing a large deck area amounting to 840 sq metres. A diesel electric propulsion system comprising four Cater- pillar 3512C generator sets, each of 1,570 ekW at 1,800 rpm, powers two Rolls-Royce azimuth thrusters of 2,500 kW.

Fixed pitch propellers of 2,800 mm diameter, with noz- zle, deliver a speed of 13 knots (at 5 m draught). Twin bow thrusters ensure good manoeu- vrability and the vessel has a dynamic positioning DP2 clas- sification. There is accommo- dation for 14 crew and up to six passengers.

Dockwise orders White Marlin

of Dockwise’s most commer- cially versatile ships for up to two quarters during a peak pe- riod of activity,” the company said.

Andre Goedee, Chief Exec-

utive of Dockwise, added: “The board of Dockwise is pleased with this outcome. The acqui- sition of Fairstar has allowed us to optimise the operational capacity of the top end of our fleet. In White Marlin, we shall have a brand new Type 1 ves- sel, constructed by a yard with whom we have built a strong relationship. “We shall also realise a con-
