2000” covers the demise of the Milwaukee Road and Rock Island and the rejuvenation of the pared-down rail system as mergers created the BNSF Railway and enlarged the Canadian National and Canadian Pacific. Railroad museums, some with operating steam power, and dinner trains blossomed during this period. Visual variety was main- tained as new short lines were spun off the Class I’s and remnants of the MILW and the Rock, including the Twin Cities & Western, Otter Tail Valley, Minnesota Commercial, and St. Croix Valley. The final chapter deals with “Railroading in the Twenty-First Cen- tury” and covers today’s modern operations on both the main lines and short lines. Of course, the state’s important iron ore railroads in the Missabe region are covered throughout the book, and an index helps make reference easy. Anyone with an inter- est in Minnesota railroads will enjoy this comprehensive, well-written edition and its wide-ranging photographic coverage.

After a

foreword by Scott Lothes, a son of Appalachia

who’s now Executive Director of the Center for Railroad Photography & Art, author Tony Reevy examines Link’s roots, his work as a commercial photographer, the motiva- tion behind the Norfolk & Western series documenting the last days of steam power, and the discovery of Link’s work by the art

world beginning in the 1970s and its rising popularity as a chronicle of a lost time. The story continues through to the establish- ment of the O. Winston Link Museum in the former Norfolk & Western passenger station at Roanoke, Va., his unfortunate second mar- riage, and through his death in 2001. Reevy examines Link’s probable influences both in the world of railfan photography (Hastings, Steinheimer, and Shaughnessy) and in the art world including Edward Hopper, the prints of Currier & Ives, and possibly Nor- man Rockwell and Walker Evans. The photographs, both b&w and color, are very well presented and enjoy excellent re- production, one to a page on heavy paper ac- companied by descriptive captions. The icon- ic Link night images are all here, along with many that may not have been seen before. One chapter is comprised of portraits of N&W railroaders, some posed, some candid. Most of the folks are in train and engine service or in the shops, but track workers, station agents, tower operators, and other crafts are also represented. Another chapter covers the locomotives, mostly at night but also during the day, in the shops, on the road, working and at rest, in wide, scenic views and extreme closeups. As the days of steam wound down in 1960, Link even shot a few Geeps as they intruded on the steam facilities, to illustrate the transition or pos- sibly to punctuate the end. There’s plenty of texture to be seen in these images: grimy steel, peeling paint, weathered wood, and weathered faces. Another chapter describes and illustrates the complicated,

bulky

equipment Link and his assistants used in those days of heavy view cameras, sheet film holders, and multiple bulb flash reflectors. There’s a strong selection of daytime

views, especially of the Abingdon Branch. At times, several iterations of the same photo- graph are presented and compared, as Link sometimes revisted favorite locations to tweak the lighting or try a slightly different angle. For instance, negatives NW 1 and NW 57 show Train 2 arriving at Waynesboro, Va., with different lighting setups. (NW 1 was Link’s very first N&W night shot and was lit very simply.) There’s also an interesting com- parison between the day and night views of the shot at Luray with the kids swimming under the Hawksbill Creek, which shows
