some. In addition to the copious numbers of photographs, plenty of maps accompany a lively, informal text to help the reader un- derstand it all, and photos of Cuba’s renowned vintage automobiles are almost as numerous as are images of the old loco- motives. Published by Canadian Caboose Press and the Good Medicine Founda- tion, this 320-page, 11″×8¹/₂″ hardcover is an engaging travelogue which contains over 1000 b&w and color photos, including many builder photos of the steam locomotives. It sells for $75.00 plus $8.00 shipping from Hayden Consulting Dept. RF, 7 South Hijo de Dios, Santa Fe., NM 87508-9133; www.bobhayden.com. The Spokane International Railway by Clive Carter is new from the Museum of North Idaho. In eleven chapters and three appendices, Carter traces the history of the 140-mile Spokane Wash., to Eastport, Idaho, line from its 1905 incorporation and con- struction in that year through its present ownership by Union Pacific. From the begin- ning, the SI was intended as a bridge route which would allow traffic from the upper American Midwest to flow across Canada (with its lower freight rates) and back into the States for delivery to Western destina- tions and ports; the SI has been aligned with the Canadian Pacific, its only northern con- nection, from the start. The book is illustrat- ed with a fine selection of well-printed b&w photos which show not only the trains but also pertinent structures, facilities, and im- portant locations, along with a good selec- tion of maps, track diagrams, employee timetable pages, and drawings. The line’s humble steam power and rolling stock are covered thoroughly, including the four ex- Delaware & Hudson Consolidations with their Wootten fireboxes as well as freight, passenger, and non-revenue equipment. The line was dieselized with a batch of black and red Alco RS1s which held down all assign- ments until the UP took over in 1959 and re- placed the Alcos with F units. The book cov- ers the railroad practically to the present day, with the most recent photos showing UP SD90/43MAC’s in 2010. In a perfect world, every railroad would enjoy such thor- ough documentation. This 216-page hard- cover has a color dust jacket, measures 11″×8¹/₂″ and sells for $49.95 plus $4.00 shipping from the Museum of North Idaho Dept.RF, P.O. Box 182, Coeur d’Alene, ID 83816-0812; www.museumni.org. The Milwaukee Road Steam Era in Wis-

consin, Vol. 1 is the first of three volumes edited by Thomas E. Burg and is new from Merrill Publishing Associates. Struc- tured around a fine selection of photos from the collection of Roy Campbell, the book covers the Milwaukee’s main line between the Illinois state line at Ranney and the Mississippi River at La Crosse. Campbell took many of the photos, and the balance are by other photographers. Once again Merrill’s wayback machine has produced a fine collection of well-chosen and nicely printed b&w images of workaday railroad- ing in the steam era, way back in the steam era in many cases. The first photo shows a sleek light Pacific on the Pioneer Limited in 1910; other pre-World War I subjects in- clude a big 4-4-0 pulling wooden coaches at Corliss, a nice Cooke 4-4-0 at Milwaukee’s Everett Street Depot, an 1873 Baldwin 0-6-0, an ex-Milwaukee & Mississippi 4-4-0 pulling wooden cars past a woodpile in
