70945 ITALIAN GOTHIC PAINTING by Margherita Zalum

In Europe, the 15th century began in the spirit of the refined, sophisticated tastes of late or ‘international Gothic’, so-called as it was the product of the continual, fruitful exchanges between courts all over Europe, thanks to the artists’ frequent travel and to the rapid circulation of the artworks. The extreme elegance and sophistication of the compositions reflect the aristocratic tone and the courtly subjects of the depictions. Extraordinary attention to realistic detail is commonplace and often accompanied by grotesque extremes or by idealised settings. The artists of the Renaissance were the first to use the term Gothic, a highly groundbreaking style. The artist who contributed to this the most was Giotto. Not only frescoes, but chiefly altar pieces very soon became the most popular art form in the whole of Europe, alongside manuscript illuminations. This very elegant outsize tome is a manifestation of this elegant culture of chivalry. Gothic art is a manifestation of deep, medieval spirituality, conveyed in the countless churches and monasteries built or restored in this period and the many paintings and frescoes created to decorate altars and chapels. Traditional subjects were replaced with new iconography which celebrated the humanity of Christ, the Virgin Mary and the Saints with unparalleled realism in their depiction of the body, settings and everyday detail. Resonant with colour, exquisite in detail, shining in gold panels and triptychs, imbued with humour in some of the courtly paintings and with passion in the suffering of Christ, almost a touch of eroticism in the bare breast of Jean Fouquet’s Virgin and Child on page 309 and with regal splendour in the Consecration of St. Augustine by Jaime Huguet from Barcelona. We counted over 65 artists including Pietro, Ambrogio, English miniature painters, Cenni de Pepo, Sassetta and other luminaries of this

evocative era. 320 huge pages, 13" x nearly 16" and in mailing box for additional protection. New Scala publication.

69749 TAHITIAN BEAUTIES 1904-1921

by Gauthier Kakou

With its lush vegetation, spectacular storms, slow pace of life and beautiful naked girls, Tahiti was a magnet for late Victorian artists such as the pioneering photographer Lucien Gauthier, who arrived in Papeete in 1904. Gauthier set

himself up as a portrait photographer, creating an album of semi-naked young beauties and recording civic worthies. He was also fascinated by the exuberant Tahitian greenery and made striking landscape studies. After a spell of military service he returned to Tahiti in 1909 but the needs of his wife and family eventually sent him back to France. During his Polynesian idyll Gauthier created timeless images, perpetuating the myth of a Garden of Eden populated with unclothed women. The languid postures and melancholy air of his subjects contribute to an erotic stereotype at a time when the contrast with the war raging in Europe could hardly have been greater. One of the most striking studies shows a naked girl standing on the edge of a precipitous waterfall, and the same girl later climbs precariously in an oriental tree. The studio studies tend to be more suggestive. Over 100 full-page beautiful monochrome reproductions. 138pp. Save £30. £46 NOW £16

69576 MODIGLIANI: A Life by Jeffrey Meyers In a sensitive rendering of the artist’s life, the author reveals not only the drink-and-drugs-ridden painter and his art but also the painters, writers and lovers who inhabited early 20th century Paris with him. Amedeo Modigliani was an Italian Jew from a bourgeois family. His friends included Picasso, Utrillo and Soutine but, unlike them, his gift was never

recognised during his lifetime and he died in poverty and neglect. A contemporary of the Cubists, ‘Modi’ turned to the art of Africa for inspiration in creating his distinctive style. 272 paperback pages with b/w plates. £11.99 NOW £6

69906 CHRISTIAN ART by Rowena Loverance What makes a work of art Christian? In this quality offering published by the British Museum, Rowena Loverance takes the innovative approach of separating Christian art from its traditional chronological framework and treating it as response to universal human themes, such as relationships between the sexes, food, friendship, those in need and coping with the demands of old age, to mention but a few. She discusses these themes through a fascinating range of 160 colour illus, of some less familiar Christian iconography, from palm mats, papier mâché figures, pilgrim tokens and ivory figurines to gold and enamel reliquaries, Byzantine, Ethiopian and Russian icons, Old Master drawings and modern prints. She also considers the assault of post-Renaissance science and philosophy on artistic output, and assesses

the current state of Christian art in the 21st century. 248pp.

69639 MAGRITTE by Marcel Paquet It is impossible to overlook the influence of René Magritte (1898-1967) on contemporary art. His surrealistic painting turns the usual order of things ironically on its head, thus restoring mystery to a world that has lost its magic. Without a specific message, Magritte’s paintings nonetheless speak to us, creating a connection between opposites on an associative level. Thus a dinner roll can, with complete naturalness, fly past a barred dungeon opening. In discussing his art, Magritte spoke of “inspired thoughts”: he was indeed a painter-philosopher who thought in pictorial form and moved with seemingly playful lightness in the exalted atmosphere of his own imagination. Features a detailed chronological summary of the artist’s life and work, covering the cultural and historical importance of the artist, approximately 100 colour illus and a concise biography. 9.4 x 11.8", 96 pages. ONLY £9

69640 MIRO by Janis Mink Joan Miró (1893-1983) is one of the most significant Spanish painters of the 20th century. His early work clearly shows the influence of Fauvism and Cubism. The Catalan landscape also shapes the themes and treatment of these initial works. In his travels, Miró encountered the intellectual avant-garde of his time.

From the mid-20s onward, Miró strove to leave direct objective references behind and developed the pictograms that typify his style. The pictures of this period, which include perhaps the most beautiful and significant ones of his whole oeuvre, dispense with spatiality and an unambiguous reference to objects. From then on, the surfaces were defined by numerals, writing, abstract emblems, and playful figures and creatures. In the post-war years be begin producing graphic works, ceramics, monumental murals, and sculptures. In these works, too, the Catalan artist sought the solid foundation of a figurative, symbolic art, featuring faces, stars, moons, rudimentary animal forms and letters. Joan Miró developed in several stages his characteristic flowing calligraphic style and his world of forms resembling shorthand symbols; from Fauvism to Surrealism by way of his original childlike style, Miró sought to shake up the establishment and in doing so made a name for himself. 100 colour illus and a concise biography. 9.4 x 11.8", 96 pages. 69644 THE MAGIC MIRROR OF M. C. ESCHER by Bruno Ernst

Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) was a master of the third dimension - his lithograph “Magic Mirror” dates as far back as 1946. In taking that title for this book, mathematician Bruno Ernst is stressing the magic spell Escher’s work invariably casts on those who see it. Ernst visited Escher every week for a year, systematically talking through his entire oeuvre with him. Their discussions resulted in a friendship that gave Ernst intimate access to the life and conceptual world of Escher. Biographical data, 250 illustrations, and explications of mathematical problems, offers answers to these and many other questions and is an authentic source text of the first order. 9" x 11.5", 116 pages. New from Taschen. ONLY £9

69621 GRAMMAR OF

ORNAMENT by Owen Jones

This classic Victorian compendium of decorative art was produced in 1856. The author, Owen Jones, voyaged throughout the

Mediterranean as a young man and in 1850 joined a group of architects working on the Crystal Palace. This book is divided into 20 chapters,

each covering a particular historical style and including Jones’s analysis of the structural and aesthetic qualities of examples from each culture. The ancient world is followed by Byzantine, Turkish, Moorish, Indian, Hindu, Chinese and Celtic ornament. For example, in the Medieval section, beautiful line-drawings of Romanesque capitals are accompanied by ten pages of colour motifs from stained glass and illuminated manuscripts, and this is followed by the Renaissance ornament developed in Italy by masters such as Donatello and Ghiberti. The author concludes with drawings from nature. 228pp, softback, 112 colour pages and numerous line drawings. ONLY £11

70933 THE PACIFIC ISLANDS, AFRICA AND

THE AMERICAS by Douglas Newton et al The art of Oceania has the dubious distinction of being least accessible non-Western art for Western audiences, and the to us otherworldly, dreamlike appearance of much of it reflected tens of thousands of years of remote isolation from the rest of the human race. The art of Africa is the oldest in the world, dating from the first modern men, some 100,000 years ago. Each of the three sections starts with an introductory essay which sets the scene with discussions of geography, history, the artists, the subjects and typical styles of the region and its art, before we are treated to a total of 135 colour photos of exhibits in the Museum’s collection. For each there is a description and discussion of its providence, age and many points of interest, and the objects range from masks, pendants, pottery, drinking vessels, earrings and sculpture to decorated shields and helmets, created from wood, stone, terracotta, gold, shells, ivory, feathers and ceramics. The gold treasures of the Mesoamerican civilisations are particularly impressive, and the poles used by the Asmat headhunters of New Guinea to display the recently removed heads of their enemies are terrifying in their beauty and function. 160 9" × 11¾” softback pages, with foldout maps and timelines.
