70899 NIGHT MAIL AND LINES FOR ALL SEASONS DVD by The National Library of Scotland

Three films which are treasures from the National Library of Scotland and the Royal Mail Film Archive. A Line For All Seasons (1980) sees Eddie McConnell in top form telling the story of the West Highland Line. West Of Inverness (1939) is an

eloquent short film about the problems faced by a rural community and its growing dependence on the outside world for provisions and goods. The Line To Skye (1973) is another gem from Eddie McConnell. It is incredible to think that the Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh could ever have been considered for closure. The lasting appeal of Night Mail (1936), celebrating the Postal Special’s run from London to Scotland, is a classic of British documentary. Its realism and lyrical structure perfectly complemented by the verse of W. H. Auden and the music of Benjamin Britten. 78 minutes b/w and colour DVD. ONLY £18

George V Silver Jubilee stamp, with dramatised scenes about Rowland Hill and amusing reactions of the general public. The Fairy of the Phone is a 1936 13 minute black and white film which is a fanciful comedy, the script based on page six of the 1936 London Directory. News for the Navy, (11 minutes, 1937), sees Evelyn send a newspaper to her fiancé Bert Higgins AB, who has gone to sea in HMS Incredible. We follow the packet until it reaches Bert’s ship in Bermuda. N or NW is Len Lye’s first non-abstract film about a wrongly addressed letter of apology.
