VM Awards Q&A

And the Winner is…

We talk to the organisers of the VM & Display Awards to discuss the story behind this month's celebration of retail creativity.

How did the VM & Display Awards come about?

As I am sure you are aware, there have been many awards evenings over the years, but we felt that there was a need for an evening that recognises the power of visual merchandising. We believe that the visual merchandising sector is one of the most important aspects of retail, and is filled with unbelievable characters so we felt it deserved to have its own celebratory evening. Each year the Awards sell out completely, and we believe the evening has become one of THE social events for the industry.

What do you think is the secret to the success of the awards? I think the secret to the success of the Awards is down to the creativity of the people within the visual merchandising industry. We completely rely on their innovation, as without them creating new schemes and ideas there would be no Awards. London is the retail capital of the world, and a lot of its success is due to the hard working creative characters within the visual merchandising sector.

How important is it for the industry to recognise success through events like the VM & Display Awards? It’s really important to reward talent and hard work, and the Awards are there to show the impact of Visual Merchandisers and Display Directors etc., hopefully helping them to get recognised by their employers. Without them the retail industry would really suffer, so we feel it is really important to highlight how valuable their work is for the industry. It is their creativity, working in conjunction with the suppliers, that entices and encourages customer spending. What has always truly amazed us is the way that the fashion industry dictates styles and trends, and the Visual Merchandisers have to be ready to completely reshape and design a store and its windows in a different creative way each time. This takes a visionary mind, and visual merchandisers are truly visionary, and should therefore be highly celebrated.
