HOT STUFF ACROSS THE GLOBE


E L James’ erotica trilogy ties up most of the fiction top spots, while Vatican intrigue rocks Italy.


Tom Tivnan reports IF THERE IS anything that we can glean from our charts over the next three days, it is that mummy porn has universal appeal. E L James has been the worldwide publishing sensation of 2012 and is Britain’s biggest author export since J K Rowling (although to be fair, she was originally published in Australia by e-book and p.o.d. publisher Te Writers’ Coffee Shop). James features in the top 10 fiction


charts in all of the territories Nielsen BookScan covers across the globe— only India and South Africa deny her the top spot. In the eight territories we will feature in the chart pages during FBF this week, James has sold a staggering 25.6 million print copies. James does, however, have some


competition in the Italian, Spanish and Indian fiction charts. In Italy, journalist, celebrity TV pundit and novelist Massimo Gramellini managed to break the James stranglehold on the top three spots with Fai bei sogni, his roman à clef about a boy coming to terms with his mother’s death. Meanwhile in Spain, Carlos Ruiz Zafón’s El prisionero del cielo is at number two, and also takes the eighth spot in Italy. In India, one man bestseller


machine and spokesman for a generation Chetan Bhagat certainly shows he has staying power. He tops the fiction chart with his 2011 novel Revolution 2020, while his 2009 title, 2 States, hangs on to a top 10 spot. Te hottest non-fiction book in


Italy has been Gianluigi Nuzzi’s Sua Santità, or perhaps as it is better known colloquially, “the pope’s butler book”. Te book’s sensational revelations about the papacy are the result of Paolo Gabriele, Pope Benedict XVI’s butler, photocopying and passing on private correspondence to journalist Nuzzi. Gabriele is currently on trial in Italy for aggravated theft.
