As we kick off a new membership year and the start of a new Olympic four-year cycle, it is a time for us all to take a look at recent achievements as well as the challenges ahead for our organization and sport. We are fresh off the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England, where USA Wrestling athletes won four Olympic medals, including two Olympic gold medals. It was an intense and exciting time, as many years of hard work and commitment from so many people were put to the test on the Olympic stage as our amazing athletes pursued their lifelong dreams. We also recently completed the USA Wrestling Board of Directors meeting, as well as the annual State Leaders Summit, where wrestling leaders made key decisions and worked togeth- er to help provide policies and programs for the future. Looking back, it is important to focus on our many recent achievements, especially our Olympic performance and the impressive membership growth we have experienced in the past year. There is so much that we can be proud of, and so much we can build upon. These results show that a lot of good things are going on every day within USA Wrestling when nobody is watching.
There is not enough space to mention all of the positive things going on, but I’d like to highlight a few. We have been able to grow and improve and become better prepared for the future. Our organization has been on a steady upward climb. We have been able to celebrate success in all of these areas: • Predictable membership growth
• Quality membership programs, services and events • Development of a brand that means something in our sport • Targeted programs that support athletes as they progress
through our pipeline - from entry into wrestling to the Olympics. • A broad and effective media platform that is the envy of many in the sports world.
It is a good time to thank everybody who has played a role in these achieve- ments. We truly appreciate what each of you do to make wrestling a better sport. We all can feel good about what we have done and what we want to do for our favorite sport. In order to grow and improve, we must not be satisfied and must continue to learn from the process which has taken us to this point. This must be done at all levels. This is where each person within wrestling, as well as the organizations which man- age our sport, must understand what Lombardi meant when he talked about “individual commitment to a group effort.” At USA Wrestling, we will continue to focus on our core busi- ness objectives, which are: 1) Growing our base; 2) Building our brand; 3) Sustaining competitive excellence on the mats and 4) Networking the wrestling community online. We will stay true to our mission of helping our members achieve their full athletic and human potential. We will commit to a continual process of long-range planning, with input from those who we serve and those we should serve. We are having a lot of success currently, but next level think- ing will lead us to the true next level as an organization. We all need to take advantage of the opportunity to learn to improve and to be inspired. It is important to understand how important the role of change can be in developing, maintaining and expanding excellence. There is never a time that is right to stand still, not as individual people and not as a collective group. Embracing positive change and challenging each other to be the absolute best that we can be provides the road map to success in the future. I invite all of you to be one of the committed individuals who
participate in the group effort on behalf of wrestling. We need to inspire each other to be the change we all want
to see.
