t could be said that Edvard Munch’s most notable achievement is attaining the status of ‘famous
artist’ despite having created only one image that most people can name. True, that one image is one of the most iconic artworks ever created and earlier this year became the most expensive painting ever sold at auction, selling for $120 million and beating the previous world record held by a Picasso nude. But still Munch remains a little understood artist, often pigeonholed as a troubled soul whose output was entirely coloured by a life filled with bereavements, illness, alcoholism and depression. In this show, Tate Modern proposes that Munch was as much a modernist as,
say, Picasso and not merely a
