Matter worked as a design consultant for

Knoll for over twenty years, designing much of the company’s visual identity including the Knoll logo and iconic advertising campaign posters. Matter is credited with breaking the boundaries between design and modern art movements in commercial work. His work was influenced by leading artists such as Alexander Calder, Jackson Pollock and Giacometti, whom Matter counted as close friends. There will be an in-conversation with

Kerry Purcell, Professor of Design History at University of Hertfordshire, on Tuesday, 18th September from 7pm and on Saturday 22nd September, there will be a screening of the documentary ‘The Visual Language of Herbert Matter’

as well as various

photographic activities. Reproductions of advertisements will be

shown alongside Knoll’s new furniture collections from London-based designer Marc Krusin, illustrating how contemporary Matter’s work remains. Visitors will also be able to purchase limited edition reproduction prints of Matter’s work during the exhibition. For those unable to shop at Knoll during

the week, the 664-metre showroom is open on the last Saturday of every month for browsing, buying and styling advice. This beautiful space, designed by Marc Krusin, offers the most comprehensive display of Knoll furniture anywhere in the UK. The ‘Knoll and Matter: Redefining

Visual Communication’ exhibition runs from14 September to 14 October2012. As noted above the Knoll showroom is at 91 Goswell Road, EC1V 7EX – Phone 020 7236 6655 and the company’s website is at www.knoll-int.com
