New Guideline Assists with Critical Topic of Commissioning

T

he just-released ICC G4-2012 Guideline for Commissioning will assist the building compliance and design communities to successfully

implement the building

commissioning process in accordance with the 2012 International Green Construction Code™ (IgCC™) and International Energy Conservation Code. The ICC Commissioning Guideline Committee, comprised of global industry leaders and technical experts, developed the comprehensive guideline and released the document for public comment last fall.

“Commissioning, or the verification of how a building performs once the certificate of occupancy is issued, ensures the design and performance of the building is being maintained and therefore reducing emissions,” said ICC Executive Director of Sustainability Programs Dave Walls. “The guideline provides a level of consistency intended to make enforcement simpler for building officials by clarifying the process and the use of approved agencies. The provisions of the guideline provide additional value to commissioning by giving building officials a path to apply commissioning to satisfy inspection requirements similar to a special inspection.”

The guideline supports the adoption and application of the IgCC and its alternate compliance paths ASHRAE 189.1 and ICC 700, as well as regional green building codes such as CALGreen.
