PRODUCER/DJ HIGH RANKIN GIVES YOU A TOUR OF HIS PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES USING ABLETON LIVE

Point Blank Online School brings you weekly fresh nuggets of music production advice courtesy of our team of pro producer course developers and tutors and guests…

We are delighted to welcome DJ/producer and afi cionado of fi lthy bass, High Rankin, to the Point Blank studios to go through some of his latest tracks in Ableton Live, creating patches in Massive, and he also gives some advice on promoting yourself online and getting your tracks signed. Here are some of the choice bits of advice that he shares:

Production I like to layer lots of chains of effects, for instance these monster noises to make a nasty

growling bass, panning them left and right to add some stereo width. When using overdrive I normally use lots of very small instances in a chain rather than using one and cranking it right up, otherwise the sound can lose all its clarity. I don’t tend to sidechain the sub-bass to the kick… I fi nd it’s better to fi nd a kick that will work with whatever sub you are using. I don’t do too much stuff that is like a constant wobble… my approach is more about chopping up samples, layering and slotting them together until they fl ow.

Live show For my live show I use Ableton running a backing track (otherwise I would need about 20 people on stage!), I’ve got a Maschine which I use like an MPC, and sometimes a midi keyboard to play in synths over the top… Tigerlight does the vocals live, with someone on backing vocals, keys, and guitar. It is really hard to get drums to sound big enough with a midi kit… so we make a drum sequence with some of the percussive
