WHILE many dance artists go their whole career without releasing even one album, it being far easier to search for a single big hit than put together a coherent collection of tracks, German DJ and producer Steve Bug is lining up to drop his fifth on 1st October with ‘Noir’ (released on his own Poker Flat label).
Following 2009’s ‘Collaboratory’, when Steve worked with friends and favourites such as Donnacha Costello and Cassy, this time around the album began from a conceptual standpoint, drawing from the moody memes and contrasts of black and white movies depicting hard drinking men and sultry dames and broads
– something DJs can no doubt relate to. While driven by a hazy late-night tension however, this theme began to bleed with muted colours as the process continued, Steve’s own moods and inspirations from his rolling international gigs entering the frame.
It’s a similar mix of moods in his chart, which might place the unashamed minimalism of Mihai Popoviciu’s ‘Trading Signals’ at the top and contains Daniel Dexter’s dark mix of Zombie Disco Squad’s Omar-fronted ‘Righteous Sound’ but also revels in Andre Crom and Martin Dawson’s uplifting ode to the old school featuring Roland Clarke.
