In the most significant drop the record had seen in the modern era, Team USA women’s 4x100-meter relay took .55 seconds off the existing world record in becoming the first team to break the 41-second barrier in a blistering 40.82 in London. It was the first gold medal in the event for Team USA since 1996 and shattered East Germany’s world record of 41.37, which was set in 1985, and the American record of 41.47 set in 1992.
