TEAM USA
AT WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
JARED SLINDE
Highlighted by a American junior record efforts from Gunnar Nixon in the decathlon and Brianna Nerud in the women’s steeplechase, the performance of Team USA at the World Junior Outdoor Championships in Barcelona, Spain, July 10-15, will go down as one of the best ever American squads under the age of 20.
When Team USA left the Montjuic Olympic Stadium following the six days of competition in July, it had amassed 20 total medals and an all-time record 188 points. The medal total was the second most by an American team at the World Junior Championships since it won 21 in 1992. Team USA came away from the Championships with the most overall medals, most gold medals (9) and equaled the most silver (4) and bronze medals (7).
In the midst of standout performances in Barcelona, Team USA established a pair of American junior records, one World Junior Championships record, four national high school records and a number of world-leading performances.
Nixon’s American junior record performance remained in doubt until he released a kick on the final lap of the 1,500m and raised his arms in celebration at the finish. His winning score of 8,018 points narrowly clipped the previous record by two points held by current University of Arkansas teammate Kevin Lazas in 2011. The gold for Nixon was the first ever World Junior medal in the event. The previous best finish for an American was Tage Peterson, who placed eighth in 1994.
Nerud set the American junior record in the women’s steeplechase and twice established the national high school record in the event throughout the duration of the Championships. Her time in prelims of 10:08.15 was good enough for the high school best mark before placing fifth in the final in 10:00.72 to better Providence’s Shelby Greany’s American junior record time of 10:00.88 she ran at the 2010 NCAA Championships.
Also adding to the records was Ashley Spencer, whose time of 50.50 to win the women’s 400m hurdles was good enough to establish the World Junior Championships records.
