"Instead of having a beam in a straight plane (a vector), the team has been able to make that beam rotated on any plane, with infinite control so now they can make that beam polarised in any direction and then they can tune the light frequency," Professor Min Gu said. "The new technique creates a truly unique way of aiming a beam of light so that it only reacts to very specific sets of particles." The research also paves the way for attacking can- cer cells with ultra-high medical safety.

Researcher at Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), South Korea, have found a way to cut battery charging times for e-cars from hours down to minutes. The rate capability can be improved in lithium ion batteries (LIBs) by reducing the dimensions of the active material; however, the LIBs would then have insufficient electrode density. To overcome this problem, carbon-coated single-crystal LiMn2O4 nanoparticle clusters were synthesized as a cathode material for LIBs; this material can be densely packed on the current collector. © Angewandte Chemie
