Virgin Atlantic goes domestic

Virgin Atlantic is to fly between London Heathrow and Manchester from March 2013. The new route, which provides competition to British Airways' short haul service, is the airline’s first foray into domestic routes. Virgin Atlantic's Chief Executive, Steve Ridgway commented: "This is just the start for Virgin Atlantic’s new short haul operation. We have the means to connect thousands of passengers to our long haul network as well as to destinations served by other carriers. He continued: "We hope that our new domestic service will provide strong competition to omnipresent BA, keep fares low and give consumers a genuine choice of airline to fly to Heathrow and beyond.” www.virgin-atlantic.com

By Laura Gelder British Airways has unveiled the second phase of changes to its winter 2012 Heathrow schedule, as it incorporates bmi’s 'old' routes. British Airways’ flights to Gibraltar will increase from seven to nine flights a week from October 28, with additional services operating on Saturdays and Sundays. A new three-a-day service to Rotterdam in the Netherlands starts from December 9, and three flights a week to Alicante in Spain begin on October 28. The airline will also take over bmi’s flights to Dublin. BA’s Tel Aviv route will benefit from an increase in flights, from 14 to 20 services a week, from October 28. From the New Year revamped A321s will serve the route, offering customers the World Traveller (long haul economy) cabin complete with up-to-date audio and video-on-demand and Club World (business) with a fully-flat bed. Keith Williams, British Airways’ CEO commented: “Integrating bmi into BA means that there will be some changes to flight timings or terminals and flights should be checked.” www.batraveltrade.com
