Water 101: The Basics and Beyond It’s time to go back to school Feb. 14-15 as the Foundation holds a day-and-a-half course on California water basics and water district board member governance at the Irvine Ranch Water District in Irvine, Calif.


The course is open to anyone, but will be especially beneficial to water resource industry staff, engineering and environmental firm personnel, legislators, legislative staff, advocates, stakeholders, environmentalists, public interest organizations and water district directors. Top speakers are committed to teach the course, which is being coordinated by the Foundation staff and Foundation Board Member Byron Buck, executive director of the State and Federal Contractors Water Agency. Registration is $250 and the registration fee includes all educational materials, coffee breaks, lunch on February 14, and a graduation certificate upon completion of the day-and-a-half course.

Executive Briefing Set for March On March 14-15, the Foundation will hold its annual 1-1/2 day Executive Briefing, “Changing Currents,” at the Doubletree Hotel, 2001 Point West Way, in Sacramento. Topics to be discussed include emergency preparedness and lessons from Superstorm Sandy; California agriculture issues and challenges; stormwater; the human right to water legislation as well as an update on Delta issues and the Colorado River Basin.


Registration for both days: $275 for Foundation major contributors ($100 or more annual contribution); $375 for non-contributors. Thursday-only: $200 for major contributors; $250 for non-contributors. The fee includes background materials, and lunch and a hosted reception on March 14. A silent auction to benefit the Foundation’s Water Leaders Class will be conducted at the briefing. Come prepared to bid on some fabulous items! 2013 Tour Dates Set


Mark your calendars – the Foundation has set the dates for the 2013 water tours. Six regular tours will be offered in 2013. Four tours are three days and two


nights: Lower Colorado River Tour, March 20-22; Central Valley Tour, April 17-19; Bay-Delta Tour, June 12-14; and the Northern California Tour, October 16-18. The two-day, one-night tours are the Flood Management Tour, May 16-17; and the San Joaquin River Restoration Tour, November 7-8. Discounts are available for registering four or more people per agency per

In addition to these six bus tours, the Foundation is offering its second annual rolling seminar train tour. The April 4-5 Sea to Sierra Water Tour offers participants a unique opportunity to travel by private rail car on Amtrak’s famed California Zephyr from Emeryville (near San Francisco) to Reno, Nev. Along the way you’ll see Suisun Marsh, Central Valley farmland, growing cities, historic mining areas and the Sierra Nevada. Speakers will offer information about the places outside the window and how they fit within the realm of California water issues. This day-and-a-half course on California water basics and water district board member governance will be held at Irvine Ranch Water District. This course is open to anyone interested in learning more about the history of and the management structure of water in California, and about the water issues facing the state.


Top speakers include: ➤ Richard Atwater, executive director of the Southern California Water Committee, discussing the role of alternative water supplies – everything from conjunctive use to stormwater resources to desalination


➤ Attorney Eric Garner, Best Best & Krieger, providing an overview of California’s water rights system ➤ Dennis O’Connor with the Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Water, discussing working with and understanding the state Legislature ➤ And many more!


Educational sessions the first day will include discussions on: ➤ California’s natural water environment ➤ Water demand and use ➤ Current issues in California water management ➤ The legal and institutional management framework ➤ The role of alternative water supplies


On the second day participants will be provided with: ➤ A governance primer for water district directors that will include the roles and responsibilities of a director, legal requirements of board members and points on understanding the news media.


The course will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. February 14 and 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. February 15.


Cost: $250. Registration fee includes all educational materials, coffee breaks, lunch on February 14 and a graduation certificate upon completion of the day-and-a-half course. Scholarships are available on a case-by-case basis.
