More than half of IT directors in the NHS say that senior management in their organisations do not understand how IT can be used to transform patient care.

In a survey of 100 IT directors, 54% had such concerns, while 87% said they were under pressure to cut costs as part of the £20bn efficiency challenge, 61% said they lacked IT strategy and planning skills in their departments, and only 41%

felt their organisation had a clear strategic vision and roadmap for IT.

The majority of respondents said the end of the National Programme for IT was a good thing, but most said they needed more resources to cope with the increased workload associated with handling more IT locally.

More than half, 56%, said the concept of a single patient view, where all data on a patient is

held centrally and shared, is “not a realistic

or achievable

objective”. Adam Kamruddin, head of healthcare at 2e2, which conducted the survey, said: “IT can and should become a vital part of providing healthcare in the 21st century. Evidently this will require investment and 71% believe that their current IT infrastructure isn’t capable of supporting those objectives. Yet pairing this with the need to cut costs makes for a tricky balancing act.”
