This issue of Solutions coincides with the announcement of a recommended merger between WSP and the Canadian consultancy, Genivar. Genivar is a leading Canadian professional services firm operating in the same market segments as WSP, predominantly in Canada.

Once the transaction is complete, the integrated company will be one of the world’s largest engineering and design consultancies with solid local networks and a strong global presence.

Our companies complement each other well, and both share a commitment to technical expertise, knowledge sharing and excellent client care. By combining our talents we will be able to offer an even wider range of capabilities to better serve our clients in all parts of the world. We will keep you informed as the merger progresses.

In this issue of Solutions we feature the first of a series on Future Cities. Within the next 20 years, three-quarters of the world’s population will be living in cities, and half of us already do. Existing cities are going through a massive process of expansion, development and regeneration, while entire new cities are rising from the ground in some parts of the world. We need to create places that are more resilient, that can adapt over time so they continue to provide viable opportunities for employment, while encouraging the health and well-being of their populations. And they should be carbon, water and waste neutral or, even better, actively help to reduce demand and replenish resources.

The challenge and opportunity for WSP and our partners is to design not just the architectural solutions, but the over-arching strategies that will enable us to achieve these goals across vast urban areas.

Within those cities, WSP is also at the forefront of ensuring that individual developments are as sustainable as possible, delivering on our clients’ ambitions for buildings that perform better, use less energy and produce less waste. In ‘10 Reasons to Build Green’ on pages 6-11, we look at the diverse range of drivers for sustainability and a selection of our many exemplar projects around the world.

For WSP, and for our partners, there are exciting times ahead. I look forward to sharing news of our collective achievements in future issues of Solutions.

Chris Cole CEO, WSP Group plc
