FEATURE FUTURE CITIES
JAYPEE CITY, DELHI
More than half the world’s population lives in cities, and by 2050, they will be home to around three- quarters of an estimated global population of 9 billion. Urbanisation on this unprecedented scale is one of the most significant challenges that global society faces. Cities are responsible for a significant proportion of the consumption that is leading to resource depletion and pollution, and causing climate change. According to a report by the World Bank, the world’s 50 largest cities are together the third greatest emitter of greenhouse gases, after the US and China. With a combined population of 500 million and a total GDP second only to the US, they also have the most to lose from the threat that the changing climate poses to well-being and prosperity.
