Tourism is a huge industry in Croatia. Many tourists go to the country to experience the extensive coastline and well-reserved renaissance towns. The interior of the country has
fewer tourist attractions but does boast the capital Zagreb, the erstwhile Baroque capital Varaždin and a large number of medieval castles. Eight areas in the country have been designated national parks, and the landscape in these areas is afforded extra protection from development. When all economic activity that is
infl uenced by tourism is taken into consideration, tourism can be seen to account for 15% of Croatia’s GDP. The top fi ve nations that visit
Croatia are Germany, Austria, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Italy. The country is generally popular as a destination with EU members, and UK visitors are also a common sight. The country is also experiencing
growing interest from countries such as Japan and China, with 54% more visitors from Japan arriving in the country from January to May this year compared with the year before.
