Michael Casper, CEO and CTO, UltraSource, Inc., a supplier of custom thin film circuits and ceramic interconnect devices, announced the new CopperVia(TM), based on the existing patented UltraVia(TM) process. The CopperVia(TM) was introduced at 2012 IEEE MTT-S International Microwave Symposium/Exhibition in June. UltraSource’s new CopperVia(TM) process fills vias with pure copper material to provide a low cost, highly conductive, extremely reliable electrical and thermal path in ceramic thin film substrates. Like its sister technology, UltraVia(TM), the CopperVia(TM) virtually eliminates epoxy or solder bleed-through while maximizing thermal and electrical conductivity and reliability.

Ultratech, Inc. (NASDAQ: UTEK) has acquired the rights to a collection of patents from IBM – these include fundamental patents in packaging such as C4 bumping, Ball Grid Arrays, lead-free solders and 3D packaging. Representing both US and foreign patents, the portfolio includes claims directed at methods of making, at compositions and at structures of semiconductor devices. This acquisition strengthens and broadens Ultratech’s offerings to facilitate advanced packaging at the lower device nodes.

Universal Display Corporation (NASDAQ: PANL) announced record-breaking performance of the company’s white OLED lighting technology at the 2012 Society for Information Display (SID) International Symposium, Seminar, and ExhibitionBelieved to be a record for a flexible lighting panel, the 15cm x 15cm white OLED lighting panel demonstrates a power efficacy of 47 lumens per Watt (lm/W) at 1,000 candelas per square meter (cd/m2) with an outcoupling enhancement of 1.4X. The white OLED panel, built on plastic substrate using the company’s novel single-layer barrier technology and highly-efficient UniversalPHOLED technology and materials, operates at a color rendering index (CRI) of 83 and a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 3470K. Based on enhancements in materials and panel design, the 15cm x 15cm all-phosphorescent white OLED panel, with a CRI of 85 and CCT of 3030K, demonstrates 70 lm/W and an operating lifetime of 30,000 hours (to 70% of an initial luminance of 1,000 cd/m2) with an outcoupling enhancement of 1.75X.
