Atlantic Paddle Symposium 2012 Report

ON THE SHORES of Nova Scotia, 75 paddlers from England to Seattle joined some of the world’s top instructors for a four-day skill development symposium this spring. Drawing sponsorships from Esquif and Mountain Equipment Co-op among others, the fifth annual Atlantic Paddle Symposium continued its tradi- tion of building enduring friendships and expanding skills, knowledge and perspectives. Zac Crouse’s skillful musicianship

and storytelling opened the event with a presentation on the Paddle to the Ocean project. Some highlights of the event were the auctioning of donations from Outdoor Research, Icebreaker, and Committed to the Core sea kayak

coaching, Air Miles and Christopher Crowhurst that raised nearly $1,000 for the Bill Mason scholarship fund. Andrew Westwood gave inspirational advice on keeping instruction relevant, current, engaging and fun. Sean Mor- ley also presented on paddling around Great Britain, Vancouver Island and coastal California. Paddle Canada instructors from

coast to coast led sessions and clinics covering every paddling discipline. Mark Scriver introduced SUP to the symposium while Kevin Gallagher, Tru- dy Killam and Graham Ketcheson ran the spring tune-up and stroke sessions. Sean Morley, Christopher Lockyer and Mat Nelson offered rock hopping, sea

WATERWALKER FILM FESTIVAL The Paddle Canada WaterWalker Film Festival is

a tribute to the late conservationist, canoeist and filmmaker Bill Mason. Every year, feature length and

short films are selected to help carry forward Bill’s mission of inspiring people to dedicate themselves to the enjoyment and conservation of Canada’s wilderness and waterways. The festival accepts films from amateur and professional filmmakers from Canada and abroad. 2012 winners include The Pipedreams Project (Environment) and Locals Only (Canadian Locations).

Organisations and individuals can help encourage more people to become involved with the protection and conservation of our unique Canadian wilderness and waterways by hosting a Waterwalker Festival viewing. Hosting a film festival is also an excellent opportunity for non- profit fundraising and for paddling organisations to connect with their communities. The cost to host a viewing is $199. kayak surfing and incident manage- ment sessions. Andrew Westwood and Dave Wooldridge ran whitewater, style and solo canoe skills sessions. Scott Cunningham led sea kayakers on a circumnavigation of Liscombe Island, interpreting the area’s sea, flora, fauna and geology as only he can. The symposium was hosted at Lis- combe Lodge, a hidden gem located about two and a half hours outside of Halifax; one of only three resorts owned and operated by the Province of Nova Scotia.
