A large proportion of Quadrant’s work is for international clients or involves international commercial law. Several of our barristers have membership of overseas bars including those of Hong Kong, Gibraltar, New South Wales, California, Germany, Greece and South Africa.
The set also offers highly experienced arbitrators, mediators and expert witnesses. We hold a pre-eminent international position in the shipping and aviation sectors, but have expanded in recent years to practise across a wider field which includes commodities, energy, insolvency and restructuring, arbitration and international arbitrations, fraud and international asset tracing, as well as general commercial litigation
The strength of our support function is critical to enable our barristers to concentrate on their work. Quadrant’s clerks are a vital component of chambers, helping law firms and clients to find the best barrister for their case, fixing appointments and assisting barristers with their administrative workload. The clerking team have been recognised by Chambers UK and are top ranked in the 2012 edition for client care. Shipping and maritime continues to be one of our core areas of expertise. We are at the forefront amongst barristers’ chambers in the breadth and depth of the expertise and experience that we provide across all areas of shipping. Chambers UK 2011 edition described Quadrant as “a name associated with the most high-calibre shipping work” and “regarded as a brilliant set”.
Our expertise in the field of Energy is exceptional and our barristers have been involved in in some of the most significant oil and gas construction disputes of recent years. Our members have considerable experience in all aspects of energy, including oil and gas contracts, operating agreements and joint ventures, design, construction and operation of onshore and offshore structures together with associated equipment and vessels. We are recognised by the Legal 500 as fielding “several big hitters” in this area.
The Aviation and Travel team at Quadrant is one of the pre-eminent sets of barristers in the aviation and travel field. Regularly top ranked in the legal directories, our barristers have been instructed in many of the leading cases, major disputes and incidents in the fields of aviation and travel handled in England in recent years. In fact Chambers UK 2012 comments that our barristers are “far more than travel lawyers. What they bring is a broader range of experience and this allows them to bring a wider commercial perspective to all they do”.
Commercial litigation is a rapidly expanding area for Quadrant. Our members appear in a wide range of disputes in commercial, chancery, technology and construction courts, as well as on appeal. A core area of expertise is in dealing with international commercial litigation. Barristers regularly act in jurisdiction disputes and deal with conflicts of law, private international law and other urgent interlocutory relief. The Legal 500 states that Quadrant barristers are “commercially aware, easy to deal with and have an exceptional grasp of contract law”.
Quadrant’s Insolvency specialists are experienced and well regarded with extensive knowledge in advising on insolvency and restructuring related issues, including: urgent injunctive relief; retention of title clauses; all aspect of company administrations; compulsory winding up petitions; applications to rescind winding up orders; validation orders; and the sale of assets from insolvency practitioners.
International arbitration and advocacy is one of our major strengths. A significant number of our members advise and appear as advocates in arbitrations worldwide and frequently travel to Singapore, Paris, Geneva, Germany, Hong Kong, Korea and Dubai to undertake work. Quadrant Chambers members are well-versed in the conduct and resolution of disputes under the Arbitration Act 1996, particularly in LMAA, trade association and ad hoc arbitrations.
