here is Georgia’s Official Frontier and Southeastern Indian Interpretive Center? Surprise! It’s The Funk
Hall of the Ancients. You’ll be intrigued by a petroglyph, a prehistoric rock drawing, found in Cherokee County near the Etowah River. Archaeologists agree the carvings are the work of ancient people, but what do you think? You’ll be amazed by the Sellars Gallery of historic hand tools. This impressive collection includes nearly 10,000 tools from 100 skilled trades and crafts, from shipbuilding and furniture-making to drafting and stone-carving. You’ll be astonished by the tools’ details and their beautiful display.
An arresting collection of Native American contemporary artwork — paintings, sculptures and jewelry created by artists from more than 30 tribes — is also
showcased in the Bennett History Museum. Outdoor features include the Lou Reeta Barton Northcutt Native Garden and the nearby Appalachian Settlement — two 1840s log cabins, a syrup mill, a blacksmith shop, a ‘tater house and a threshing barn. Although the cabins are open only for group tours or special events, they present a wonderful photo opportunity and are a short walk from the History Museum. If you want to share the Funk Center’s surprises with a church, school or Scout group, see group tour details on the Funk website. Special events also take place throughout the year.
Please visit the Funk Heritage Center soon and let us know what surprised you most!
