‘The sights and smells of Lakota Cove evoke memories that keep visitors coming back.’
Lakota Cove welcomes visitors with plenty to see and do
O
n Thursday, May 10, Win and Jan Cates departed from their Big Canoe home, along with 35 visiting friends, to begin
a few days of touring sites of interest in North Georgia. Their first visit was to Lakota Cove. The Cates’ contingent was made up of long-time friends who had been colleagues, all working for the Cabot Corporation. For at least 10 years, the friends have been getting together, rotating the honor of being the host couple. Members of the group came to Big Canoe from as far away as Arizona, Louisiana and Massachusetts, and even France. The group calls themselves the Ol’ Dawgs (sorry Ugga, not you). Jan Cates — pronounced “Jane,” Texas style — chose Lakota Cove “because it is just such an interesting place. There is something here for everybody and I knew that Linda and Jim Magness and their staff would welcome our friends and make them feel at home.” To punctuate that thought, Linda Magness, Lakota Cove proprietor, made up gift “goodie” bags for the Cates and all their guests, complete with area brochures and other items to help make the visit memorable. While the Cates’ visit was rather large by comparison with other groups, Lakota Cove is not unaccustomed to playing host to folks taking in the beauty and diversity of the Appalachian Foothills. Throughout the course of each year since opening, there have been annual events including barbeques, artists’ festivals and a local favorite known as Women’s Night Out. Because Lakota Cove features a significant amount of original art, furnishings and accessories from the American West, there is a constant theme

associated with “Cowboys and Indians” present, and accentuated during the many events throughout the year. Besides the American West, themes
that flow through the store individually and collectively reflect peace and mysticism consistent with the glory of raw nature — to many visitors it is such a contrast to the hard, noisy brashness of urban life. Often described as rustic, exquisitely hand-crafted furniture pieces, both massive and intricate, contribute to an experience similar to that of a fine-art gallery. “That’s what people find here and
it’s what we want it to be,” says Linda Magness. “We show items from men and women who are true artists in their own
right. There’s nothing mass-produced here.” Visitors to Lakota Cove come with multiple interests from sheer curiosity to highly developed knowledge and appreciation of fine woodworking, painting, carving, etching, metalworking and photography. The vast majority of items are made of natural materials, incorporating wood, leather, ceramics and stone. The sights and smells of Lakota Cove evoke memories that keep visitors coming back.
Of course the experience of Lakota Cove any given day, week or month will change on the subsequent visit. Items arriving daily bring new surprises to await those who keep coming back, as well as the staff who gather around each new delivery anxious to see what just came in. Canoe Company, developer and builder in nearby Big Canoe, Lakota Cove has the substantial challenge of finding the next “new look” for decorating model and show homes as they come on stream. In early June, the task will be to fully furnish the latest Choctaw Village show home, which will remain on display for up to two years. Items for the show home were arriving even as this article was being written and include a series of timber- frame furniture with beautiful hand-carved accents featuring trees and other natural motifs. else new and exciting will arrive the next day. For such is the way at Lakota Cove, along with the festivals, the barbecues, the pets and the horses, and all the very friendly people. And that’s what keeps folks coming back.
