Crafting authentic Southern Appalachian wines R

ed Burgundy wines are made from Pinot Noir grapes grown in the Burgundy region of France, and Chianti wines are made

from Sangiovese grapes grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Cartecay Vineyards’ wines are made from grapes grown at Cartecay Vineyards, allowing the wines to express the terroir of the Southern Appalachian region of the United States. “We’re not here to imitate someone else’s

wine from another region of the world,” says Larry Lykins, owner and operator of Cartecay Vineyards near Ellijay, Georgia. “Cartecay and other regional vineyards and wineries are here to create unique wines using numerous grape varieties, European

and native American, that provide distinct characteristics of their own.” Lykins explains how the North Georgia

terroir, climate and soil, will support some well-known grape varieties such as Chardonnay and Merlot but is not suitable for others that can’t withstand the disease pressure (Pinot Noir) or the climate fluctuations (Pinot Grigio). “Not only do we have to be selective in choosing grapes that tolerate our climate,

our soil and even our unique population of insects and fungi, we want to select varieties that will allow us to make a statement — a Southern Appalachian statement.” That statement includes wines made with the native American grape, Norton (Cynthiana), often maligned by winemakers and consumers because of its wild, earthy tones and its frequent association with other native American grapes such as Muscadines.

“We’re working with Norton because it loves our climate and soil and because it works to make some really interesting, complex, big-bodied red wines that are regionally unique and pair well with red meats and peppery food,” says Lykins. “We’re also growing some French- American hybrid grapes such as Traminette, with a Gewürztraminer heritage, and Vidal Blanc, which makes a delightfully crisp white wine, as well as European varieties, such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon,” he says. Most important, Lykins says, “we, along with our other North Georgia winery friends, are creating our wines to be regionally distinct in every respect. We are innovators, not imitators.” Cartecay’s charming tasting room, situated in a century-old barn at the vineyard, invites you to come and experience the wines of the region — your region, here in North Georgia.
