Torbay: A great venue for the waste management industry to meet up

I am delighted that the Plant and Waste Recycling Show is coming back to Torbay, which is an ideal destination to host conventions and conferences, as well as being a great place to invest for business. Environmental technologies are one of the key sectors for growth and employment in Torbay.

Torbay is a unique location for businesses looking to invest, expand or relocate. We offer competitive costs, access to skilled labour, excellent education and healthcare and an unrivalled quality of life.

Already thriving in the Bay are world leading knowledge-based companies, including advanced electronics

industries, marine and environmental technologies and healthcare sectors; therefore businesses from your sector would benefi t from being part of a growing hub for modern technologies. Torbay offers a range of bespoke

property for speculative development, and the green economy is recognised as one of the key areas for growth in Torbay.

There is much more information about Torbay’s offer to business on the website of our

Gordon Oliver Mayor of Torbay

A warm welcome to PAWRS

In this momentous Queen’s Jubilee and Olympics year, Torbay’s calendar of events is even more jam-packed than ever. One of the highlights on that calendar is the annual Plant and

Waste Recycling Show. It therefore gives me great pleasure once again to welcome our

many friends to Torbay for this superb trade showcase event. As in previous years, Torbay Council is absolutely delighted to

welcome organisers, participants and visitors to the show which not surprisingly continues to grow in popularity. Last year’s show was of the highest quality. Feedback from visitors

was extremely positive and the event proved to be a resounding success - a credit to all concerned. My portfolio includes responsibility for waste disposal - not at the

sharp end I hasten to add, but certainly from a strategic perspective. Here in Torbay our household waste and recycling collection

teams in our joint venture company TOR2 do a fantastic job. Residents across the Bay are playing their part by embracing our efforts to promote more recycling which, in turn, reduces the amount going to landfi ll. Last June the Bay’s household waste recycling centre was

offi cially re-opened following a £500,000 revamp which included the provision of improved facilities for householders and trades people. Towards the end of the year, we enabled residents to recycle even more, including several more plastic items.

6 SHOW GUIDE

This initiative was made possible thanks to the support of Unilever, one of the world’s leading fast moving consumer goods companies and manufacturer of many household brands.

Events such as PAWRS have a huge role to play in promoting recycling and effective waste disposal. They also provide a signifi cant boost for the Bay’s economy, so we are grateful to Richard Hunt and his team for giving us another vote of confi dence by once again choosing Torbay.

I recall Richard saying after last year’s show that he was leaving Torbay with a smile on his face. I am confi dent that he and everyone else connected with it will leave with an even broader smile this time around.

The agency’s website includes a section on forthcoming events,

so please check out http://www.torbaydevelopmentagency.co.uk/ tda-events to fi nd out more. It’s also worth mentioning that our Torbay Council website also has an extremely useful events section at http:// www.torbay.gov.uk/events To fi nd out about our opportunities for business, please contact

We can organise site visits, introduce you to the local business community, help with business support and skills, provide key data to support your business case and assist you in staff recruitment, property search, relocation and communication. An excellent coastal location, Torbay offers great schools, housing,

job opportunities for partners of employees and local community link. All of these are areas in which we can assist you. We can help communicate the Bay’s quality of life advantages to your organisation’s most valuable asset – your staff. Torbay is a prime location to visit, as I’m sure you will fi nd during

PAWRS; and I urge you to consider while you are here what a great place Torbay is to live, work and invest in, too.
