PAWRS: An important opportunity to meet, network and show a united front

The skip industry is going to be out in force at this year’s PAWRS. According to Richard Hunt, PAWRS chairman (see page 4), it is the fi rst time that all the major skip lorry manufacturers are going to be at a trade event at the same time, so this will defi nitely be something for visitors to the show to make the most of. There will be no surprise as to the main topic of conversation; namely the overnight increase of landfi ll tax trommel fi nes from £2.50 to £64 per tonne and the devastating impact this will have on businesses such as skip hire companies, waste transfer station operators and haulage specialists. The government’s lack of consultation and sudden 2,460% hike

in the cost of disposing of inert trommel fi nes has provoked shock and outrage within the waste management and construction industries. By the time you read this, let’s hope the government will have done a u-turn on the increase in landfi ll tax trommel fi nes; just as they did with the ‘pasty tax’ and ‘static mobile homes tax’. It seems ludicrous that the government and national media are discussing pasties when there are thousands of jobs at risk in the waste management and construction sectors.

Talk about Nero fi ddling while Rome burns. On a happier note, PAWRS and its unique setting is the ideal opportunity for the waste management and recycling sectors to network, check out the latest technology, source leads and, hopefully, agree those all important deals. Torbay is thrilled to host the fourth outing of PAWRS (see page

6) and you will fi nd the show organisers are only too happy to help you set up your stand, fi nd your way around and make your stay in this lovely part of the UK as comfortable as possible. So all being well, we will be celebrating the government implementing a freeze on the increase in inert fi nes in Torbay or discussing what measures need to be taken to show a united front. Either way, the show is going to be anything but dull.
