TUCCI, Continued from page 25
ships you have developed with our greatest American wrestlers, and how special have those relationships been in your life. Tucci: It is more important than anything else. You like to think you are a good official. In the book written about the Olympic Trials, there were some nice comments by athletes who said when they saw me on the mat, they had confidence I would make the right call. That means more than anything to me. From the Olympic champions to the future champions wrestling in Fargo, I have prided myself in doing the right thing and making the right call. I want to be the fairest I can be for the wrestlers.
USA Wrestler: As a teacher and mentor, what do you share with younger officials who want to advance as an official? Tucci: I tell them to work a lot in their state and county. I say to attend clinics where you have an experienced teacher. I explain when they are being evaluated, and an official criti- cizes you, they may say things you don’t agree with. You have to have an open mind. You have to take the good with the bad. If you can’t take constructive criticism, you can’t get better. However, most of the good officials take to heart what their instructors tell them.
USA Wrestler: You will be working your seventh Olympic Games in London. Do you still feel nervous and excited when working at that level? Tucci: I’m very excited to go, as I have been at all Olympics. I’m especially excited for London, as I am bringing my wife and two boys along with me. It is good to know you have been selected. I will do what I can to make sure my mat makes the right calls. I have done more Olympics that any other American. I feel honored and humbled.
USA Wrestler: What are the skills and personal qualities needed to be an excellent referee? Tucci: Some say you have to have been a wrestler, but that is not necessarily true. I think being a wrestler helps because you can anticipate things. You can’t be lazy. You have to have a certain disposition. If you call three and the other two refs go with one, you can’t show expressions or anger. You have to be open, ask questions and accept the praise with limits. Don’t let it get to your head. You are only as good as your last match.
