Hello

From the PTA-UK Team

Welcome to PTA Magazine, the official magazine of PTA-UK! The new-look ezine is simply packed full of features and items such as our first mini guide - Social Media, all a PTA needs to know (page 9) and our triple page bumper Summer Fundraising special (page 13). Now’s a great time to be a PTA Volunteer, with so many additional fundraising opportunities abound this summer term. Your PTA has probably decided on how the school community is going to celebrate and mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics but if you’re looking for further inspiration, we’ve got two great features to mark these historic occasions. So take a look at page 6, for hints and tips on running a Big Jubilee Lunch and page 10 on taking part in London 2012 World Sport Day. And talking of inspiration, we are delighted that Paralympic silver medallist and former World and European Champion Ian Rose, has spoken to PTA-UK about his sporting achievements, how Judo helped his confidence and how he is now motivating children of all ages (see page 18). Without giving my age away (!) this is my third Jubilee. I’ve still got the commemorative coin that my PTA bought every child as a keepsake, way back in 1977 and I so fondly remember the street party (in the school playground) and my best friend being our Queen for the day, even though I was very jealous! These are moments to treasure so whatever your PTA is doing it’s going to be a big bundle of memorable fun, with the cash rolling in to boot!

MEET THE TEAM - an amazing group of people, at your service. We introduce you to...

Annette Wiles

PTA-UK Policy and Research Manager, Annette’s been a part of the team since 2005 focussing on policy and research. This means talking to members about our services, taking part in external consultations and keeping an eye on legislation. “I was once asked if it was OK for a PTA to offer a goldfish as a prize. Yes - as long as the winner is over 16 years of age!” said Annette, who also makes a significant contribution to PTA-UK’s website, e-bulletins and PTA Magazine.

Lynne Maguire

PTA-UK Adviser Lynne is one of eleven locally based advisers and has been with PTA-UK since 2003, looking after all PTAs in the West Midlands. During this time Lynne has helped numerous schools set up a PTA. “We have such rich and diverse cultures in the region” said Lynne “setting up a PTA can be quite a challenge. It’s so rewarding to see new PTAs thrive and grow, particularly if they have overcome barriers”. Visit www.pta.org.uk - see what’s going on in the West Midlands.
