LONDON 2012 WORLD SPORT DAY
With schools finalising their plans to mark The London 2012 Games there is still one major event that PTAs can support before the start of the greatest festivals of sport.
London 2012 World Sport Day, presented by Lloyds TSB, on Monday 25 June is a chance for your school to celebrate the athletes and cultures of the world and show your support for the teams which will be competing in the Olympics. It’s also the first day of Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week.
To get involved your PTA could organise a Global Showcase of sports, languages, food, music and dance from around the world. This celebration gives PTAs a chance to shine. Do your members have skills or talents that they could teach the students? Why not encourage your school to serve international cuisine at lunchtime, or use lesson time to discover the customs of your twin school?
World Sport Day requires very little planning. If schools are hosting their own opening ceremony for example, you can hold it on World Sport Day, and access a wealth of resources to shape the event. Pupils can use the step-by-step guides and videos to learn the London 2012 Mascot Dance! Schools are encouraged to make the flags of your chosen Olympic and Paralympic teams. Rally the whole school together to create and show off your flag and invite parents, the community and the media.
Schools can request their free celebration pack containing World Sport Day decorations. Schools which are part of the London 2012 Get Set network will receive a bumper pack containing additional materials such as a giant banner and bunting. This will arrive in May, so in the meantime you can use the “We’re A Supporter” toolkit to download templates for making your own decorations. Visit www.london2012.com/worldsportday to access the resources and request your school’s free event pack.
