So why the Croc?


That Crocodile motif is probably by now one of the most famous logos in the world of cool sport influenced fashion gear. So where did it come from? Was it just a snap decision (ha, ha,)?

t’s a great little story this. Back in 1923 René Lacoste had a bet with the Captain of the French Davis Cup team, Allan H. Muhr. If René won a


big match for them, he would buy him a crocodile-skin suitcase. The bet became public knowledge


and was picked up by the Boston Evening Transcript. In the story, the journalist nicknamed René ‘the crocodile’. The American public took to the nickname, thinking it suited René because of his tenacity on the tennis court. Just like a crocodile he never let go of his prey! A friend of René’s, Robert George,


was an illustrator and suggested making the crocodile in to a personal motif. René took the design and had it embroidered on to the blazer he wore on court. That was it, the birth of the crocodile logo and it all started with a bet.

Lacoste crocodile became the first logo to ever be featured on the outside of clothing! And it appeared on the legendary Lacoste polo shirt, designed by René himself, initially just for his personal use, so as he could bare the sweltering heat on the American tennis courts. This alone was a revolution, up until then standard attire was a long-sleeved city shirt. Quite an influential chap that René !
